Meet Shane, a 58-year-old veteran whose life is a testament to extraordinary resilience and the power of perseverance in the face of adversity. Born with a brain tumor, Shane underwent surgery as a young child. Doctors told his family he would never speak, but his grandfather was determined to prove them wrong. Through patience and persistent teaching, Shane learned to talk. Shane recalled that his grandfather’s last words were, “You’ll never be able to shut him up.” For a time, Shane achieved great financial success, building a lucrative career.
A proud veteran who served four times, Shane is also the father of ten children—eight boys and two girls. However, addiction consumed his family’s wealth and stability. He has been fighting hard for recovery and is now 79 days sober, demonstrating incredible determination. Shane has been trying to regain his footing by operating a taco truck to support himself. Still, his business was abruptly shut down, despite his understanding that he had obtained all the required permits. He now faces a court battle to defend his livelihood.
In addition to fighting for his business, he is also battling for his wife’s health. Shane’s wife was recently attacked in the streets of Phoenix and is currently recovering from a broken rib. Shane notes an alarming rise in violence both on the streets and within shelters, leaving him and his wife fearful for their safety. His story shines a light on both the hardships many face and the remarkable human spirit that keeps pushing forward against all odds.
